Presidents Report
Aloha HICOM Ohana,
I am grateful to welcome our new HICOM President, Grif Frost, MBA. He accepted my recommendation to assume leadership of the college at this important time. We all are lucky to have someone of his stature and over 30 years experience building and managing businesses. He built, from the ground up, an english language school in Japan that made key innovations to the teaching process. The school received high marks from students. I expect HICOM to grow and develop past all my hopes and dreams with Grif's guidance and commitment.
I am completely humbled by the depth of sharing that all of you, whether student, faculty, staff, board and community, have contributed to the college over the years. We all are responsible for the benefit to our communities of training healers to care for them. I am thankful for the opportunity to have played a key role in this effort.
I am assuming the Dean of Oriental Medicine duties and many thanks to Zellda for trying this out and instead choosing to be an excellent Clinic Supervisor and Teacher.
It is with deep respect for the medicine and to each and every member of the HICOM Ohana that I welcome Grif's leadership.
Who Is Grif Frost?

Grif Frost is an entrepreneur at heart. He has started, developed and sold over forty of his own businesses in Japan, on the Mainland United States and in Hawaii.
Among those businesses was a private English Language college he created in Japan. In the beginning he was the sole teacher. He built the college into a successful program with over 3500 students, 30 full time teachers and staff, 12 course years of original curriculum and expanded to 17 teaching locations in just four years.
Grif was recognized as one of the top 10 foreign teachers in Japan out of a pool of teachers that numbered in excess of 10,000.
His businesses included a 100 room onsen hotel in Japan, a $20 million home fitness equipment manufacturing and direct marketing business (Soloflex) and a $10 million premium sake brewery in Forest Grove, Oregon. He even has copies to share of his bestselling "Sake Pure & Simple" book with forward by Andrew Weil, MD for those who are interested.
It was the result of working with renowned Hawai'i chef Roy Yamaguchi, who owns the famous "Roy's" restaurant chain that he made Hilo his home.
He teaches at UH Hilo's College of Business & Economics where students have awarded him a 95% excellence rating. He shares his management expertise with many of the key non-profit organizations on the big island of Hawai'i.
Grif joined the volunteer HICOM board in February, 2011 at the request of president Jacqui Hahn, ND. He was quickly elected Chairman of the Board.
Grif was awarded a Global MBA from Thunderbird College of Business that is known as one of the top international business schools in the world.
Grif is passionate about helping people improve their Life Quality (LQ) which he defines as;
#1: Excellent personal health,
#2: Loving Ohana Relationships and,
#3: Business: finding an interesting way to put groceries on the table.
He has been working closely with HICOM since last year to develop holistic healthcare professionals who produce excellent results for their patients while making an LQ income for themselves.
His efforts at HICOM fit in perfectly with his personal goal of helping people improve their LQ. As his Japanese father-in-law confided to him (and since his father in law was trained as a kamikaze pilot he wasn't too fond of talking with his American son-in-law), "without health you have nothing". Actually those were his last words to Grif and he has taken them to heart.

HICOM announces a new certificate program is now available to students beginning next March. The program is called "Manual Medicine". It is based on a process developed by Jeffrey Dann, PhD, LAc called Koshi Balancing that is highly effective for musculo-skeletal issues. It is a combination of Japanese based manual alignments of the body with superficial needling or acupressure. This three day offering is the first in a series designed to have the student and practitioner become proficient in the process.
Article Written By Jeffrey On Koshi Balancing...
"In this second essay, I introduce the Japanese cultural body-mind concept of the koshi - the lumbar-pelvic center and connect this to notions of structural alignment derived from the therapeutic systems of So Tai Ho, Seitai Ho and Seitai Shinpo. In this Part 2, I will discuss the concept of koshi and
relate it to its core anatomy and Japanese traditional medicine.
In Part 3 we will integrate this anatomical structural view of the koshi with the Channel energetics of acupuncture emphasizing the crucial relationship of the Dai Mo (Belt) extraordinary meridian to the Gall Bladder Channel, Sinew Channels, Liver Blood, and Shaoyang (sho yo) energetics..

Next Step In Ongoing Accreditation Process Is Announced
Hawai'i College of Oriental Medicine met all accreditation requirements except for 36 items noted in Site Visit review report from ACAOM. This report is available for review at the administrative offices for HICOM. Please address any questions to Jacqui Hahn, ND.
As is standard, the college has until June 1, 2013 to make required changes and provide progress report confirming these have been completed. This status is referred to as "Probationary Accreditation".
This temporary status notes that the colleges' accreditation is solid and the noted specific changes are required to be updated. This step in the process is expected as ACAOM is required to continually upgrade national requirements and respond to new federal regulations.
HICOM has already responded to ACAOM in regards to many of the items that have already been remedied. Plans are being developed to remedy or satisfy the remaining items. None of the items are considered substantial nor pose a threat to completing the re-accreditation process.
Hawaii College of Oriental Medicine is institutionally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is the recognized accrediting agency for freestanding institutions and colleges of acupuncture or Oriental medicine that offer such programs.
The Masters of Oriental Medicine program of Hawaii College of Oriental Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is the recognized accrediting agency for programs preparing acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners.
ACAOM is located at 14502 Greenview Drive, Suite 300B, Laurel, MD 20708; phone 301/313-0855; fax 301/313-0912.
