Licensure Requirements For Acupuncturists

The State of Hawaii requires 1515 academic hours and 660 clinical hours for licensure as an Acupuncturist with the designation, LAc.

Applicants must have passed the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) written examination Acupuncture comprehensive written exam or its equivalent. No practical examination is required.

More detailed information is available from the Board of Acupuncture, Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, P. O. Box 3469, Honolulu, HI 96801.

Licensure requirements vary widely from state to state.

Any student considering a practice outside the state of Hawaii should refer to Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Laws (National Acupuncture Foundation, Washington, DC, (202) 332-5794) to determine other states’ requirements.

This is particularly applicable to prior learning assessment credits that may be accepted at HICOM and in Hawaii for licensing, but not accepted in other states.
